The Talbot County Sheriff’s Office, Criminal Investigations Division (CID) is a specialized unit that concentrates on criminal and drug investigations. Currently, the unit is led by the Criminal Commander (Lieutenant) and assisted by a Detective Sergeant, who supervises criminal investigators; deputies assigned to the Talbot County Drug Task Force; a Sex Offender Registry investigator; and Heroin Coordinator.
The duties of the Criminal Investigations Division (CID) consist of initiating and conducting follow-up investigations involving crimes occurring predominantly in Talbot County. CID is staffed with detectives specializing in violent crimes, property crimes, cold cases, special victim crimes (physical or sexual abuse and neglect), and financial fraud or internet crimes. The Criminal Investigations Division is also responsible for conducting background investigations for deputy applicants.
Criminal investigators receive specialized training and must be well versed in the principles and application of criminal law; appellate court case law pertaining to interrogations and search and seizure; applicable laws governing arrest; and agency policy and procedure.
The Talbot County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division manages the Sex Offender Registry (SOR) for Talbot County. The SOR unit conducts and oversees field checks of sex offenders, ensuring their compliance with state law. On average, the SOR unit registers 45 offenders throughout the county. The majority of those offenders are required to register several times a year.
